Morning, Does anyone at MD work with Tableau, in specific the documentation for using duck with it. I've found what seems to be issues with the docs Tableau has posted. https://exchange.tableau.com/products/1021
Hi! Are you working with Tableau Cloud / Desktop / Server? We have multiple ways of connecting: using the Postgres endpoint for Tableau Cloud and the DuckDB JDBC connector for Tableau Desktop and Server. Here is the documentation for more details on each case. I can also loop in our customer engineers if you have in-depth questions about your specific use-case 🙌
This Tableau desktop. I've got it working, and the docs on MD are fine. (with one possible caveat). But the docs on Tableau have issues. I'm not sure it would be useful to try and contact them or let MS know. I can write up detailed info, just not this second:)
I can answer ad hoc here now tho if it helps
What's the caveat? And sure, take your time! I will then ask internally if this is something we can bring up with Tableau.
Yana, ok so I haven't fully tested as I don't have tableau myself I'm trying to help some ppl at work. On my first attempt I pulled down the JDBC driver that was tagged for windows AMD64 specifically, and that didn't seem to work. When I used the 'full' one, or the 'non platformed' one it worked. I have to assume that it might be a file name thing?
As for that page on Tableau.com, well AS far as I have been able to gather the instructions to put the driver into Desktop Windows: C:\Users\[YourUser]\Documents\My Tableau Repository\Drivers straight up does not work. In the default config drivers need to be in the Tableau folder in program files. As far as i've been able to find there is no in app way to change this location, no launch param that lets you set it for the session, and no app install param to change at install time.
I found a forum post that if you change something in the user's registry you can re point it, but as written The docs on the Tableau site seem to be a hard fail.
So on enterprise manage systems, non admin users cannot setup duckdb with tableau without esoteric knowledge about the registry settings.
just for the sake of completeness the location for the TACO file is fine and correct.
One last item that may be at issue, this is with tableau desktop 2024.3. If the directions are different for different version, that would be int the docs. But I haven't been able to find any info on that this behavior is different regardless of version.
Ok I have to go. I'll follow up later as needed 🙂 thanks
Hi, thank you for a detailed write-up! I will take a look and get back to you 🙌
Hi again, it's been some time, but I wanted to update you that we logged the inconsistencies on our side and will be working on adjusting them. Thanks again for flagging this!
